Hat with chin strap
Baby hat, with button up chin strap. Knitted from Patons & Baldwins Helps to Knitters 283, style ‘Lynette’ dating from early 1932. The yarn is a Patons angora mix (55% angora/45% wool) called ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy’ in shade 5501, pink. Unworn.
Hat with satin lining and ribbon bows
Child’s hat, crocheted with gathered brim. It is pink with blue lining and blue satin ribbon ties. There are rosettes of ribbon where the ties are attached. Made from fine 2 ply wool. Same materials as 2014.005.0009 adult fascinator. Patons archive hand written swing tag label says “Childs Crochet Hat”, there is also a similar typed label.
Knitted cap with long white feather
Adult hat, hand knitted flat in white wool. It's one piece with a shaped crown and the seam centre back. The garter stitch brim is stiffened with a wire, over which crochet is worked. Decorated with a feather pushed through the fabric.
Tam knitted in four pieces with tassel
Hat knitted in four triangle shaped brown and yellow wool sections, which were then sewn together. The 3-striped brim is reinforced with petersham ribbon. The tassel is attached with a crocheted wool cord from the centre of the hat. Patons archive hand written swing tag label says “Brown-Yellow Hat Tassal” The pattern is from Beehive Booklet No 23, Hats, Caps and Tams. Fair Isle tam with 7 point star
Multi-coloured knitted wool tam. Adult size, hand knitted from Shetland, has Shetland Woollen Industries Association Ltd label sewn in to crown. It was knitted in the round, in 11 colours, main colour light brown. There is a 7 pointed star on crown. The hat is unworn. Patons archive hand written swing tag label states ‘Geunine Fair Isle Beret’. Inspiration for Patons booklet SC104, “Five Fair Isle Tammies in Fiona”, published in the 1960s.

Multi-coloured knitted wool tam. Adult size, hand knitted from Shetland, has Shetland Woollen Industries Association Ltd label sewn in to crown. It was knitted in the round, in 11 colours, main colour light brown. There is a 5 pointed star on crown. This hat is unworn. Fascinator with ribbons
Patons archive hand written swing tag label states ‘Knitted Fascinator Early 20th Century’. Knitted flat in 2 types of fine wool. Stripes are openwork alternating with closer garter stitch. One end gathered into rosette held with blue satin ribbon bow. Opposite end fringed.
Childs Hat and Mitten Set
Child’s bonnet (A) and mitts (B and C) set hand knitted in Shetland. Dark brown wool with star patterns on crown of bonnet and round brim using 6 contrast colours. Mitts have peasant thumb construction and bonnet has chin strap.
Bonnet has Shetland Woollen Industries Association Ltd label sewn into crown, label also sewn in left mitt. Unworn. Patons archive hand written swing tag labels say “Childs Shetland Bonnet” and “Childs Shetland Mitts”. Patons and Baldwins pattern 923 (4d price) gives instructions for knitting these items though the pattern uses only two colours.
Adult mittens with fairisle star patterns
Wool mittens hand knitted in Shetland. These mittens have a star pattern on back of hand and seeding (alternate colour stitches) on palm. They are light brown with 5 contrast colours. ‘Peasant’ thumb construction. Shetland Woollen Industries Association Ltd label sewn in right mitt. Patons and Baldwins pattern 962 (4d price) gives instructions for knitting these items. (Not available). The gloves are unworn.

Wool mittens hand knitted in Latvia. Star pattern on back of hand and small colour pattern on palm. Cream and brown with multicoloured cuff. ‘Peasant’ thumb. Fingered gloves with a fairisle band and ribbed cuffs
Wool gloves for a child, hand knitted in Shetland/Fair Isle? Light brown with a band of colourwork around the hands. 5 contrast colours. Peasant thumb. Unworn. Patons archive hand written swing tag label says “Fair Isle Gloves”
Bootees with tasselled drawstring
A pair of hand knitted bootees for a baby, in white wool. Knitted in the round in one piece, the leg and top of the foot have a small textured stitch pattern, while the heel and sole are in moss stitch. A twisted cord tie with small tassels is threaded through eyelet holes around the ankle. Their Patons archive label states ‘Special garment. No leaflet’ and also ‘Patons Beehive Baby Wool (Patonised). They appear to be a sample to show Patons yarn in use. Unworn.
Gaiters with colourwork cuffs
A pair of knitted gaiters in white wool with a patterned band in 2 colours around the top. This turns over a band of ribbing. Shaped for the leg and knitted flat, they have a seam up the back leg. Knitted from the top they flare out to fall over the foot or shoe. A length of elastic goes under the foot. Unworn. Patons archive hand written swing tag label says “Gaiters”
Knee length Socks/Stockings with ribbing
A pair of hand knitted knee length man’s stockings in light brown wool. The turn-over top is cabled, folding over a band of ribbing. The leg is a broad rib. The heel and sole are in stocking stitch. The heel is a ‘Dutch’ one and the toe ‘Flat’ (terms from Woolcraft 14th edition).
Ladies stockings with lace patterning in light brown
A pair of hand knitted woman’s stockings in light brown wool. They are knitted from the top in a small lace rib, the leg is shaped. The heel is a ‘Dutch’ one and the toe ‘Flat’ (terms from Woolcraft 14th edition). Bohus Hat - " The New Red Edge" design
A Bohus product hat, finely knitted in light natural wool and six colours, front patterned in colour work and textured stitches, with garter stitch edge around the brim and a shaped crown. Label in back neck ‘Bohus STICKNING’, a company which existed in Sweden to produce hand knitted garments as a poverty reduction measure. The design is named ‘New Red Edge’. Knitted in the round. Patons archive hand written swing tag label says “Hat Bohus Knitting”.
Bohus Scarf - "Red Edge" design
A Bohus product scarf, finely knitted in light natural wool and five colours, a deep patterned border at both ends in colour work and textured stitches. A product of Bohus Stickning, a company which existed in Sweden to produce hand knitted garments as a poverty reduction measure. The design is named ‘Red Edge’. Patons archive hand written swing tag label says “Scarf Bohus Knitting”.
Bohus Gloves - "The New Red Edge" design
A Bohus product pair of gloves, finely knitted in the round in light natural wool and five colours, with a patterned panel on the back of the hands, in colour work and textured stitches. The cuffs which are a deep hem are brushed to give a fluffy effect. A product of Bohus Stickning, a company which existed in Sweden to produce hand knitted garments as a poverty reduction measure. The design is named ‘New Red Edge’. Patons archive hand written swing tag label says “Mitts Bohus Knitting”.
Hat with peak
The peaked hat combines the textured pattern from the body of the sweater with the striped fabric from its sleeves. The peak is stiffened and the hat is finished with a band of ribbon. A fabric label says ‘Gordon Lowes of KNIGHTSBRIDGE’ and a second label says ‘Tally-Ho. Made in England. Regd.TM. 45054 61/2-6.7/8. Possibly adapted from a purchased hat. Patons archive hand written swing tag label says “Ladies Skating Outfit". This is part of the green skating outfit.
Stockings with cable patterning
These are knitted in green wool in a narrow cable rib. The heel is Dutch and the toe is flat. This is part of the green skating outfit.
