Hand knitted skating outfit
A hand knitted skating outfit consisting of sweater, skirt, hat and stockings in green, black and white wool. This set is described more fully and with more detailed photography in the component items:
Sweater
The sweater combines a textured front with sleeves in narrow stripes of all three colours. The texture is also on the back of the sweater. The neck is trimmed with knitted bobbles.
Skirt
The skirt in green wool has box pleats formed by lines of slip stitches and panels of stocking stitch and reverse stocking stich. The pleats are tapered into the waist. Knitted from the waist. The skirt was knitted in two pieces and has side seams. The waist is formed by a k1 p1 rib turned over to enclose elastic.
Hat
The peaked hat combines the textured pattern from the body of the sweater with the striped fabric from its sleeves. The peak is stiffened and the hat is finished with a band of ribbon.
Stockings or over the knee socks
These are knitted in green wool in a narrow cable rib. The heel is Dutch and the toe is flat.
Two piece - waistcoat and skirt
A two piece outfit consisting of matching waistcoat and skirt knitted in 2 shades of grey wool.
Waistcoat.
This has an open front with textured bands trimming the front edges, armholes and pocket tops. The waistcoat is closed with straps and a button at the waist. Patons archive hand written swing tags say ”Lady’s Waistcoat Part of Two Piece”. Working pockets on each side, fastened with a button on a band. 84cm underarm; length shoulder to hem 54cm.
Skirt
Knitted in light grey with bands of textured stitches, the lower edge trimmed with a sideways knitted ruffle. Patons archive hand written swing tags say ”Lady’s Skirt Part of Two Piece”. Waist fastened by hooks & eyes. The waist is 74cms, length of skirt 67cms
Mock Fronted Jacket with Pleated Skirt
A two-piece outfit knitted in blue and green wool the Patons archive label says ’Ladys’ (sic) Suit with Mock Front. Old Fashioned Garments. Early 1930’.
Jacket
The jacket is knitted flat in garter stitch in pieces with a turned back striped band. The mock front is knitted sideways and sewn in place on one side with popper fastenings down the other. A broad belt in garter stitch is fastened with a purchased clasp in dark green mottled plastic and is held in place being passed through openings in the jacket front. Label "Ladies suit with mock front early 1930s"
Skirt
The skirt is knitted sideways in stripes of both colours with pleats formed with alternate stocking stitch and garter stitch. The waist band is petersham fastened with hook and eyes and a side opening is done up with poppers. Fabric label sewn into waist band states ‘Display garment. Patons & Baldwins wools with beehive logo’. Waist 62cms, length 80cms.
Pattern
The Beehive Series of Knitting & Crochet Recipes Card No 31 Price 2d - Lady's Knitted Costume - The "Pauline" Design - says that the outfit is "suitable for sports wear". The British Library copy of the card has the accessioning stamp for 1921 so we can assume that this was the date of publication.
Afternoon dress with tassle belt.
A dress and matching belt hand knitted in blue wool.
Dress
The dress is labelled with Patons own “Handknitted Model” label which says ‘From Patons Historical Collection, Afternoon dress with tasselled belt, Blue’. A panel of textured stitches runs up the centre and sides of the garment, and edges the short dolman sleeves and the bottom edge. The V neck has a turned over collar in textured fabric. 118cms long, knitted flat in one long piece.
Belt
The belt is plaited from multiple strands of the wool used in the dress and finished with tassels at both ends. Label "Afternoon dress with tassle belt"
Ladies afternoon dress with ribbed skirt
Blue Knitted dress for afternoon wear. Features a belt round the waist. A hand knitted dress with matching belt, labelled ‘Ladys' (sic) Afternoon Dress with Ribbed Skirt’. Knitted in blue wool the neck has a textured pattern forming a V at front and back. The rib stitches of the skirt form flat pleats. The belt is a twisted cord finished with tassels.
