A hand knitted evening outfit consisting of a knitted top and skirt with fabric belt.

This outfit featured in a lecture by James Norbury, News about Knitting, to the Wool Education Society in 1952 - there is a printed & illustrated booklet with the text of the lecture in the Guild collection.  It is knitted in Beehive 2-ply, according to the text, and was worn with a (fabric) stole and belt. 


Knitted Top

A finely knitted sleeveless top in light blue wool with sequinned and beaded trim around neck and armholes. Both neck and armholes are finished with a small picot hem. The body has a fully fashioned structure to give a close fit and has a deep rib K1 P1 at the waist. Patons archive hand written swing tag says “Knitted Sequined Top & Fancy Belt”

Fabric Belt

The top comes with a matching wide fabric belt with diamante buckle

Knitted Skirt

A full length hand knitted evening skirt with a deep border of lace in chevron panels and leaf motifs. Knitted in the round from the waist which is formed from a K1 P1 band folded over wide elastic. Matching net is sewn in under the lace panels to give support.

Blue Evening Outfit

An evening outfit consisting of dress, belt, underskirt and shawl, in Patons Cameo Crepe, knitted with lurex, designed in 1951 for the Festival of Britain.

 

Dress

Patons archive label states ‘P & B Handknitted Model. This garment is not for sale ..’. Floor length, sleeveless. V neck front and back, decorated with diamante buttons. Band of rib at waist. Skirt has panels of lace and reverse stocking stitch with garter stitch band at bottom edge. Knitted in two pieces with side seams. Dress features cap sleeves and diamonte buttons around neckline and down back bodice. Underarm 90cms, length of shoulder to hem 140cm

Belt

Fabric belt with diamante clasp, belt set for waist measuring 66cms.

Underskirt

Fabric underskirt in tiered sections, bottom section stiffened with heavy interfacing. 15cms of boning at hem. Length 104cms

Shawl

Fabric (figured damask) rectangular stole lined with plain knitted fabric in same yarn as dress. Patons archive hand written swing tag says “Ladies Lurex Stole”. The original catalogue entry listed the material as wool/fabric. The shawl is Lurex but lined with knitted stocking stitch.
